The Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition (HKSSPC) 2019 Award Presentation Ceremony was held today at Hong Kong Science Park, celebrating the application of innovative science through projects and nurturing young talents who have demonstrated high potential in science and technology.
The Project Competition is jointly organised by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG), the Education Bureau (EDB) and the Hong Kong Science Museum. It is supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation.
The Officiating Guests at the Award Presentation Ceremony were Mr. Kenneth CHEN Wei-on, SBS, Vice President of the HKFYG; Mr. CHENG Ming-keung, Acting Principal Assistant Secretary (Curriculum Development) of the Education Bureau; Miss Bertha YEUNG Ming-sze, Acting Curator of the Hong Kong Science Museum; Dr. LEUNG Tung-yiu, Biotechnology Officer of the Innovation and Technology Commission; Mr. KO Chun-kuen, Senior Electronics Engineer (Electronics Systems) of Innovation and Technology Commission, Professor Edwin CHAN Ho-yin, School of Life Sciences of The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Professor KWOK Kin-wing, Associate Dean of Faculty of Applied Science and Textiles and Professor of Applied Physics from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Mr. Kenneth CHEN Wei-on, Vice President of The HKFYG, expressed his pleasure at the response and enthusiasm of all the participants, especially those from the Junior Division. “This reflects junior students getting a head start in seeking technological advancements through their amazing and innovative inventions. I am very impressed by the quality of all the projects this year and would like to congratulate all the participants for their tremendous efforts.”
Mr.Chen added that the HKFYG’s Creative Science and Technology has a deep commitment and dedication to not only promoting a culture of science and technology, but also providing a platform for young people to experiment and explore their interests.
This year’s theme was “From Theory to Practice‧Develop Science Potentials”, and the Competition saw 1,000 students from 80 schools in 300 participating teams at the initial judging. The winners from this extraordinary field were: , “Easy Go” a new mobile APP to evacuate user to escape from fire by QualiEd College, and “Feasibility of Using Microbes to Grow ‘Textile Material’” from The Chinese Foundation Secondary School in the “Invention Project” and “Investigation Project” for the Senior Division. For the Junior Division, the “Invention Project” and “Investigation Project” champions were, respectively, A real-time elderly monitoring system “E-Care” from Po Leung Kuk Celine Ho Yam Tong College and “Investigation on Air Quality: Gas CO2 Concentration” from Heep Yunn School. The top three place winners in each division will be sponsored by the organisers to participate in a science and technology exchange programme and be given the opportunity to take part in the InnoTech Month 2019 organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission.
About HKSSPC
HKSSPC has been committed to promoting the interest of our youth in science and technology and developing their science potential through better understanding and innovative application over the past 20 years. This year, the Initial Judging was successfully held in Hong Kong Science Park on 23 March 2019 with a division for international champion teams, promoting academic exchange between local and overseas students. 23 international teams coming from ten countries and regions were invited to Hong Kong, including the USA, Korea, Turkmenistan, Singapore and the Philippines, to demonstrate their innovative ideas. “A Novel Method for General-purpose Lie Detection Using Electroencephalogram Data” from South Korea and “NaBe (Analog Rice From Jackfruit Seed)” from Indonesia were awarded the first prize in the International Division.
