The HKFYG Wellness PLUS Complex
Pioneers new community-based primary care services
focusing on mental health, nutrition, and sports
The mental health of young people has always been a matter of great public concern. By improving their health literacy, it is believed that diseases can be prevented at an early stage, and a balance of physical and mental well-being can be maintained, reducing the burden on the healthcare system. The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) has newly established the HKFYG Wellness PLUS Complex, the first of its kind in Hong Kong dedicated to young people, providing health management services and cultivating all-round health professionals. Based on the capacity of the Complex, it is expected to serve over 15,000 young people annually.
The Complex held its opening ceremony on 15 July. Dr Lam Ching-choi, a member of the Executive Council of the Government of the HKSAR and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Mental Health; Dr Pang Fei-chau, Commissioner for Primary Healthcare; Vincent Cheng Wing-shun, Tik Chi-yuen, and Benson Luk Hon-man, Legislative Council members; Kenneth Chen Wei-on, President of the HKFYG; and Hsu Siu-man, the Executive Director of the HKFYG officiated at the event. Nearly 100 social leaders, academic representatives, guests, and young people attended to learn about the facilities and services, and participate in the seminars.
Hsu Siu-man, the Executive Director of the HKFYG said that the completion of the building marks an important milestone for the Federation, opening up new community-based healthcare services. She believes that maintaining mental health among young people can help them realise their full potential and build lifelong resilience. The building, through its three main themes of mental health, nutrition, and sports, aims to help young people achieve the vision of “Create Health for Youth · Create Health by Youth”.
Hsu Siu-man also congratulated the Complex’s service for outshining over 30 other places globally and winning the “Award for the Best International Social Prescribing Project” at the 2024 Social Prescribing Awards, which was hosted in London to recognise and celebrate the wealth of innovative social prescribing projects and schemes running throughout the UK and internationally.
The Supervisor Andy Chan Ying-kit introduced the building’s tech-driven facilities, including A.I. Healing System, Sport Science Lab, and Nutrition Kitchen. In terms of services, the building has introduced a “Social Prescribing” health management model, working with medical and social services to address common health concerns among young people, such as insomnia, obesity, skin problems, sport injury and emotional issues, and providing customised personal health management plans. It also offers professional training and internship opportunities, allowing trained young people to become “Youth public health practitioners” providing services in the community, schools, and enterprises, jointly building a healthy society.
After the opening ceremony, Dr Michael Dixon, CVO, LVO, OBE, MA, FRCP, FRCGP, Chairman, College of Medicine, UK shared ways to improve public health in Hong Kong; Dr Crystal Ying Chan, a research assistant professor from the CUHK Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care, lectured on health management and medical transfers; and Sandy Ma Pui-man, the unit in-charge of the Complex, shared the youth practice and benefits of social prescribing.
The HKFYG Wellness Complex is located at 154 Kiu Kiang Street, Sham Shui Po, Kowloon. The five-storey building, previously a kindergarten, now provides one-stop health management, support, and training for young people, addressing common health concerns such as insomnia, obesity, skin problems, and emotional issues through an innovative “health management” model, and training a large number of young people to become “Youth public health practitioners”, comprehensively promoting the all-round health development of youth.
