The HKFYG Jockey Club Stanley Outdoor Training Camp offers the largest youth water sports platform in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) Jockey Club Stanley Outdoor Training Camp, located at St. Stephen’s Beach in Stanley, is a unique camp and water sports training venue in Hong Kong. The camp has been providing day training and other recreational activities since 1974. In 2016, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust donated more than HK$140 million to rebuild and enhance the facilities, with additional accommodation and catering services. The Opening Ceremony for the brand-new campsite was successfully held on 19 July.

Chief Executive of Hong Kong, The Honorary John Lee Ka-chiu; Deputy Director General of the Youth Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Professor Song Lai; Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, Dr Silas Yang Siu-shun; Vice-President of HKFYG, Dr Allen Fung Yuk-lun; Senior Advisor, Dr Rosanna Wong Yick-ming; and Executive Director, Andy Ho Wing-cheong officiated at the Ceremony. Over 250 young people were also in attendance and experienced the new water sports activities.

Andy Ho Wing-cheong, Executive Director of HKFYG, said that the Federation is committed to providing a wide range of recreational and sports facilities and training programmes to help young people develop a healthy lifestyle and the spirit of teamwork, as well as an understanding of sustainable living. To further promote water sports in Hong Kong, HKFYG, with over 50 years of training excellence, will provide young people with a wide array of water sports experiences and training platform through its facilities in Stanley, Sai Kung and Tai Mei Tuk Outdoor Activities Centre. HKFYG hopes that young people can build a positive mindset and, as they adopt sporting values, will pass these on in their communities. It is hoped that the programmes will also encourage young people with athletic potential to participate in professional training, contributing to the city’s sports industry and young athletes’ employment.

Dr Silas Yang Siu-shun, Steward of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, said that sports and culture is one of the key priority areas of the Club’s charity strategy. The new training camp will benefit the community, especially young people, by offering a variety of water sports experiences, which will strengthen their physical fitness and cultivate positive thinking. The new camp will also increase public interest in water sports and promote sports participation.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust has also committed to funding of over HK$4 million to support a three-year HKFYG Jockey Club “GoActive” Water Sports Project, starting after the completion of the redevelopment of Stanley Outdoor Activities Centre. Young people will be motivated and encouraged to participate in aquatic adventure activities and challenges at the new training camps, providing them with enjoyment and boosting their self-confidence and resilience.

The HKFYG Jockey Club Stanley Outdoor Training Camp currently occupies an area of 586 square metres, with accommodation for an additional 83 guests and capacity for 45 participants for both day and evening camps. Facing Stanley Bay, the camp offers a wide range of emerging water sports experiences and training programmes, including stand-up paddle, pedal kayak, board rowing, sailing, windsurfing and large water inflatables.

In addition, the design of the Camp features a sustainable green layout and offers a wide range of ecological expeditions to encourage young people to explore nature and adopt a low-carbon lifestyle. It is estimated that there will be more than 20,000 users each year.
