The Global Youth Science and Technology Bowl (GYSTB 2022), organised by the Creative Education Unit of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG), will stage its Opening Ceremony, Finals and Awards and Closing Ceremony online from 10 to 12 June 2022.
A series of activities will be arranged to facilitate mutual learning and exchange so that the global young scientists will be encouraged to apply their scientific knowledge to solve everyday problems and promote sustainable development. Audiences around the world can participate in this annual scientific event through the LIVE broadcast, and learn about the innovative ideas of the younger generation, as well as witness how the teams compete with each other to be crowned champion.
Each team will comprise of not more than five students who are in Forms 1 to 6 (or equivalent). They will also each develop a project in relation to the theme of Sustainable Development, using theories from physics, engineering, biology or chemistry to investigate science topics or create innovative and practical inventions.
The GYSTB 2022 has attracted 125 school teams from 27 countries and regions, including the United States, Ireland, Sweden, South Korea and Singapore. Altogether, 84 teams were shortlisted for the Finals on 11 June. Seven winning teams from the Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2021 (HKSSPC 2021) will represent the city and have also been shortlisted to compete with their global counterparts, and strive to achieve glory for Hong Kong!
The three-day competition will be live-streamed online globally, and the public can visit facebook.com/groups/gystb to watch. On June 10, they can watch the Opening Ceremony; Prof. Edwin CHAN Ho Yin delivering webinar about his journey in becoming a scientist and listen to last years’ Gold Award winners share their experiences and stories.
The next day, on 11 June, teams will present their inventions or investigation projects to professional judging panels formed by academic and industry representatives.
On 12 June, at the Awards and Closing Ceremony, Gitanjali Rao – Time Magazine’s 2020 Kid of the Year, will be the Guest Speaker and will share her science projects and insights on sustainability. At the same time, culture performances from different countries/regions will be showcased to facilitate exchange.
In addition, starting from 12 June, the public are invited to participate in the online voting of “Visitors’ Favorite Award”, supporting their favorite projects. The voting period is two weeks, please visit ce.hkfyg.org.hk/gystb for more details.
