Jointly organised by Education Bureau (EDB), The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG) and Hong Kong Science Museum (HKScM), the annual innotech education event — the Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2026 — held its Final Judging cum Award Presentation Ceremony today (18 April). The Competition attracted entries from over 250 local secondary school teams. With “Extreme Weather” as this year’s annual theme, the Competition encouraged students to propose innovative solutions to address environmental challenges through scientific research and invention, injecting fresh momentum into local innovation and technology development.
Focusing on Extreme Weather — Scientific Research to Address Global Challenges
Upholding the spirit of “Inspiration from Living · Innovation from Science”, participating students underwent an in-depth process of exploration, creating projects and sharing them with the public, through which they cultivated teamwork and enhanced their problem-solving and communication skills. The Competition was divided into Junior and Senior Divisions, encompassing four categories: “Invention”, “Investigation”, “Invention Design Proposal” and “Investigation Design Proposal”. A “Scientific Wallchart Division” was also established to encourage students to interpret scientific concepts through creative visual means, showcasing their diverse talents.
The organisers previously held a series of training seminars and workshops covering topics such as extreme weather and literature review, experimental design, data analysis, design thinking, guidelines on artificial intelligence applications, and presentation skills, providing participants with a solid foundation for the Competition.
Professional Judging Panel Selects Outstanding Projects — Four Champions Shine
The Chair Judges of the Senior and Junior Divisions respectively were Prof. Ray CHEUNG Chak-chung, Associate Provost (Digital Learning), City University of Hong Kong and Prof. Raymond WONG Wai-yeung, Dean of the Faculty of Science, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, leading a professional judging panel comprising 10 representatives from the organisers, academia and industry. Projects were assessed on multiple criteria including creativity, design and analysis, social impact, presentation skills and teamwork, to determine the winners of each award.
The Champion of the Junior Division (Invention) was St. Paul’s Convent School — Re:Page “Re:Page” is a mobile food-waste paper machine that instantly transforms plant-based food waste and waste paper into recycled sheets. Beyond reducing landfill pressure and carbon emissions, it fosters green education in which children witness waste become paper within minutes. Re:Page embeds green habits and engages communities through interactive recycling experiences.
The Champion of the Junior Division (Investigation) was Heep Yunn School —Pistachio & Peanut Thermal-shielding Films. This study extracts cellulose from pistachio and peanut shells and carrageenan from red algae to create a thermal insulation film for glass; nutshell cellulose is also added to cement to make a thermal insulation coating, in order to alleviate the impact of rising indoor temperatures caused by global warming.
The Champion of the Senior Division (Invention) was PLK Celine Ho Yam Tong College— Hydroguard – AI-powered water quality monitoring platform. HydroGuard is a compact AI powered IoT vision system for automated detection and real time environmental monitoring. It tracks chromoprotein signals from engineered E. coli in alginate beads, bridging synthetic biology with live data collection.
The Champion of the Senior Division (Investigation) was Carmel Pak U Secondary School —Anti-bacterial Bio-BandAIDeepSeek, Anti-bacterial BandAIDS is a bio-bandage with dressings made of chitosans obtained from fermentation using an AI deacetylase which is more water soluble than its original A. nidulans chitin deacetylase.
The Competition also featured a number of special awards to recognise projects that demonstrated outstanding performance in specific areas, including the “Social Innovation Award”, “Sustainable Development Award”, “Annual Theme Award”, “Best Newcomer Award”, “Best Potential Award” and the “Visitors’ Favourite Award” determined through public voting.
Distinguished Guests Gather at the Award Presentation Ceremony to Witness the Innotech Power of Youth
Dr CHOI Yuk-lin, JP, Secretary for Education, the Hong Kong SAR Government, served as Guest of Honour. Other officiating guests at the Award Presentation Ceremony included HSU Siu-man, Executive Director of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups; TSUI Chi-man, Curator (Extension), Hong Kong Science Museum; Dr Dr HO Sai-hau, Vice-Principal of Hong Kong Design Institute and Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee); Ponny LAM, Programme Officer, Croucher Foundation; Professor Anderson SHUM Ho-cheung, President of The Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences; Professor CHAN Ho-yin, Edwin, Director, School of Life Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Professor LEUNG Wing-mo, Adjunct Professor, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University & The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Ricky LEE Man-hin, Manager of Smart City and Digital Transformation, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, who together witnessed the emergence of a new innotech force in the education sector.
Dr CHOI Yuk-lin, Secretary for Education, in her speech stated that the competition encourages students to integrate their knowledge and skills in STEM. Through scientific research and innovative invention, students propose novel solutions and inventions that actively address environmental challenges, improve people’s daily lives, and promote sustainable development in society. In recent years, the Education Bureau has continuously implemented various measures and strategies to strengthen students’ ability to integrate cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills, fostering their innovative thinking and problem-solving capabilities. The Bureau will continue to collaborate with different stakeholders to provide students with more diverse opportunities in science and technology education, thereby broadening their horizons.
HSU Siu-man, Executive Director of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, expressed her delight at the strong scientific research capabilities demonstrated by the participating students, as well as their commitment to the environment and sustainability. She noted that many teams drew inspiration from nature in devising their solutions, embodying a shared ethos of living in harmony with the natural world. She encouraged students to hold onto their passion, stay curious and never stop pursuing excellence in science and innovation, expressing confidence that their creativity and sense of responsibility would be a force for a more compassionate and sustainable future.
Winning Projects Open Exhibition — Winning Teams Advance to the International Stage
The winning teams will participate in a Winning Projects Exhibition at the Hong Kong Science Museum on 9 May, where they will showcase their inventions or scientific research findings to the public. Members of the public are welcome to visit and explore the future development of science and innovation together. The winning teams will subsequently take part in professional training and study tours at local universities, and will have the opportunity to represent Hong Kong in international science competitions, broadening their international perspectives and bringing glory to the city.
