Outstanding Local Primary Students Win Two Champion Awards in World GreenMech Contest

Learning STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) by constructing a creative and precise contraption with building blocks is a challenging task for primary students. Organised by the Learning through Engineering, Art and Design (LEAD) Project of The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (HKFYG), the “Hong Kong GreenMech Contest” selected 12 outstanding teams to participate in the World GreenMech Contest from 31 July to 3 August in Taichung, competing with 250 teams from around the world. It is with great joy to announce that The Hong Kong & Macau Lutheran Church Primary School and Fuk Wing Street Government Primary School won 2 World Champion Awards respectively in the competition.

At its first time to join the “GreenMech Junior Contest”, the team of the Hong Kong & Macau Lutheran Church Primary School performed remarkably well in two spontaneous tasks at the world contest with a DIY rubber band-powered car. Meanwhile, Fuk Wing Street Government Primary School got the World Champion Award by constructing an accurate and stable contraption with smooth and steady operation.

Mr Kenneth Lee, Head of Youth Business of The HKFYG congratulated the Hong Kong winning teams on their outstanding performance. He encouraged the team members to further develop their interest and potential in science and creative education with passion and persistence. “STEM is an excited and multi-disciplinary subject where creativity, knowledge and hands-on exploration are required in order to achieve the goals,” he said. It is the pleasure of the LEAD Project to provide local students with continued exposures and opportunities, so as to broaden their horizons and pursue excellence through participating in these learning activities.

The World GreenMech Contest is introduced to Hong Kong by The HKFYG LEAD Project. With the support of Babyboom Learning Co., Ltd. and Gigo Industrial Co. Ltd. , the contest is sponsored by Innovation and Technology Commission and venue sponsored by the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation. The HKFYG has been organising the Hong Kong GreenMech Contest annually since 2010. A total of 1,700 local primary and secondary students participated in the event over the past years. It is a platform where students and teachers are able to learn, exhibit and enrich knowledge about STEM. Within a limited time frame, participants are required to construct a precise contraption and test out the stability of the system. It also requires participants’ knowledge in science, their hands-on ability, problem solving skills and team building capability. For more details, please visit lead.hkfyg.org.hk.
