Outstanding Local Secondary Students Win Awards in Korean Fair

For the first time, four school teams from Hong Kong participated in the Korea Science and Engineering Fair 2019, from the 17th to 22nd October. They competed against 66 other teams from twelve countries in Biology, Chemistry, Invention and other challenges, coming away with excellent results.

The four schools represented were local winners at the Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition (HKSSPC), jointly organised by The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Science Museum, and supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation.

The Korean Fair required the teams to address some of life’s daily problems and implement environmental protection through practical solutions or research. Professor Ho Ho Pui and Professor Lam Hon Ming from The Chinese University of Hong Kong provided expert advice to the teams, helping them enhance their projects before participating in the Fair.

Gold Award Winner, Shun Tak Fraternal Association Yung Yau College, who also won a Special Award, developed multi-function protective coatings to reinforce and cure trees with their “Super Glue for Tree Defects”.

Winning the Silver Award, QualiEd College’s “Quick Escape” devised a smart building system enabling the hearing impaired to evacuate and escape in case of fire.

The Bronze Award was won by Po Leung Kuk Celine Ho Yam Tong College for their “E-Care”, a system to detect the health and safety conditions of home-bound elderly at any time.

Pak Kau College received an Honourable Mention for “Investigating the Effect of Visible Light on Plant Development”, a study to promote the most suitable lighting source for indoor hydroponic development.

Mr. Kenneth Lee, Head of Youth Business of the HKFYG congratulated the winning teams on their outstanding performances. He encouraged all the participants to remain curious and passionate about science. “With creativity and technology, you never know what you will discover,” he said. “STEM education helps lay the foundation for skills needed in this century: to be critical in your thinking and to communicate and collaborate with others. It is the honour and privilege of the Federation’s Creative Education Unit to be able to provide local students with exposures and opportunities that nurture talent and promotes exchanges.”

The objective of the Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition is to develop students’ interests and potential, encouraging creativity and innovation. Ever since 1998, over 10,000 local secondary students have participated in the HKSSPC, a pioneer in local science fairs. In recent years, overseas students have joined their local peers in order to promote mutual learning and broaden horizons.
